Laboratory Technical Officer

In this role, you will be responsible to analyse patient samples in the Emirates Medical Services Laboratory, which includes loading analysers, validating and authorizing results in Haematology, Biochemistry and Special Chemistry departments, and notify the Laboratory Technical Specialist(s) and/or Laboratory Manager all abnormal and clinical significant results.

Job Outline

• Ensure that all daily, weekly and monthly internal Quality Controls checks are performed at the start of the day, prior to analysing patient samples. Any analytes falling outside the acceptable limits must be brought to the attention of the Laboratory Technical Specialist(s) and / or the Laboratory Manager immediately so that corrective action can be taken. Participate in the external quality assurance program with the implementation of the corrective action when pre-determined performance criteria are not fulfilled.
• Ensure that all samples received in the relevant departments are processed in a timely manner. Prioritise urgent samples from the routine work and ensure all published departmental turn-around-times are adhered to. Ensure all urgent and critical results are relayed to the ordering clinician directly and records maintained. Review and authorize all examination results by evaluating them against internal quality control and as appropriate, available clinical information and previous examination results. Monitor examination results for trends or bias which may indicate issues with the analyser itself
• Ensure all analytical instruments are calibrated and preventive maintenance carried out at defined intervals. Perform daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of analytical instruments. Troubleshoot any problems with the laboratory instruments as they arise, and perform corrective action where necessary. Ensure all reagents used are appropriate and in-date.
• Ensure all minimum reagent stock levels are maintained and that all stock utilised is in date. Monitor reagent stock usage and storage conditions and escalate any increases or decreases in usage to ensure consistent supplies and minimal wastage. Ensure that each lot of reagents are checked against earlier tested in-use reagent lots or with suitable reference material and document the outcome.
• Ensure all laboratory specimens are stored as per standard operating procedures (SOP's) and that no testing is performed on samples outside the acceptable testing guidelines. This may require informing doctors that a recollection is required as the sample is too old to add additional tests to maintain laboratory standards.
• Prepare, examine and interpret blood cell morphology using clinical history and knowledge base, while referring significant abnormal findings for pathologist review. Identify and amend any errant laboratory results. All non-conformances must be escalated to the Laboratory Manager. Demonstrate and apply professional knowledge in Biochemistry, Haematology and Special Chemistry maintaining annual continuing medical education (CME) requirements mandated by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and the individuals own professional registering body's requirements for licensure.
• Help to maintain and further develop the relationship of the Emirates Medical Service Laboratory with all key stake holders in the Medical Services. Promote communication both within the Laboratory team and also within the service as a whole. Develop a strong working relationship with all reference laboratories to ensure continuity of service relationships.
• Maintain the laboratory ISO 15189:2012 accreditation requirements by demonstrating competence in the Quality Management System of the laboratory, assigned work processes, the Laboratory information system, health and safety including the prevention of effects of adverse incidents, ethics, and confidentiality of patient information.
• Actively mentor all EK.06 Laboratory staff to ensure their professional growth. This includes providing support with doctor and patient enquiries, report re-prints, external reference laboratories and external licensing bodies.
• Present ongoing project data, review and incidents, complaints or compliments, and provide feedback in regards to the laboratory service across the medical services in the monthly panel that makes up the Laboratory Advisory Committee.
  
  

Qualifications & Experience

To be considered for this role, you must meet the below requirements;

• Degree Medical Technologist (Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology / Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent).
• Post-graduate experience in a Medical Laboratory.
• Preference for individuals with experience in a multi-disciplinary environment, with a generalist background.
• Registered and / or licensed as a Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist (or equivalent) with a recognised international body.
• Licensed to practice as a Laboratory Technician by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).
• Experience in the UAE is desirable.
• As laboratory medicine is constantly evolving, the Laboratory Technical Officer is expected to use a range of professional skills to keep their knowledge up to date with the latest biomarkers and test discontinuation.
• Accuracy of testing and knowledge of quality assurance is paramount to this role.
