The Role

The HSE & Safeguarding Officer will be a crucial Health and Safety department member and an all-rounder in strategising, planning and executing day-to-day HSE Operations. You will support in leading functions within the team and collaborative working with faculty and other professional services departments.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Implement and maintain all HSE documentation and procedures.
  • Maintain and improve safe campus performance to implement better HSE outcomes.
  • Site fire, risk and operational audits.
  • Co-ordinate with external agencies and organise HSE-related training.
  • Prepare the Method Statement and Risk Assessment for all new projects.
  • Health and Safety Induction to new staff members/students.
  • Lead campus incident investigations and resolutions for issues.
  • Maintain safety culture and ensure Middlesex HSE plan is implemented
  • The HSE & Safeguarding Officer is responsible for inspecting the campus and preparing the report.
  • Report all accidents/incidents.
  • Induce the safety culture among staff and students.
  • Escalate the safety violations and non-compliance
  • Ensure safety plan implementation on campus
  • Collaborate with Academic Faculties and Professional Services Staff and ensure a high level of Health and Safety working environment.
  • To be committed to and promote safeguarding students and staff and working across the University to ensure the best student experience.
  • Supporting the continued implementation and development of the University Care and Concern and Safeguarding framework and related policies/procedures and providing input into updating and enhancing these.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for any safeguarding concerns, providing timely, relevant support and advice to safeguard the students and other members of our University community and, in doing so, to observe current legislation, statutory and other guidance about data protection and confidentiality and follow cases through to conclusion.
  • Keeping informed of current legislation, statutory and other guidance regarding safeguarding and cascading the information to members of staff and the broader community, including students.
  • Liaising with multiple University departments as part of the ongoing monitoring and support for students when there has been a safeguarding concern.
  • Establishing and maintaining a working relationship with relevant statutory, voluntary and community agencies and making timely external referrals to various agencies, including ambulatory services, to appropriately safeguard and support students and other members of our University community.
  • Attending internal safeguarding-related meetings and external training/professional networking opportunities to learn the best practices about safeguarding.
  • Maintaining up-to-date, accurate, confidential records and providing, collating and monitoring regular, accurate and timely data on safeguarding incidents and outcomes.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade as appropriate.

Requirements

Post Holder Requirements

The successful candidate will hold:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience, preferably in an Education environment.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Electrical/ Mechanical, or related Engineering.
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices and a good understanding of writing reports and policies for health and safety.
  • Diligent with great attention to detail and good organisational skills.
  • Any occupational health and safety certification is advantageous (i.e., NEBOSH).
  • Proficient in MS Office; Working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus.
  • Good awareness of quality and safety procedures.
  • Proven track record of working with complex issues of a difficult and sensitive natue.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Excellent communication skills in English both verbal and written.
